Some moments remind you that impact doesn’t end — it multiplies.
Years ago, through APEGA’s Mentorship Program, I had the privilege of guiding a few early-career engineers as they navigated their first professional steps. We talked about confidence, communication, and the real work of finding your place in engineering.
What I didn’t expect was to see the full circle years later.
Two of those former mentees, Shirley and Erick, now volunteer with Mujeres Omega Foundation, mentoring the next generation of girls in STEM through our Building Bridges program.
Their work has already begun to ripple outward. Shirley was recently featured in Building Bridges 2025: Engineering Bonds That Last a Lifetime, a reflection on how our workshops create connections that go far beyond the event itself. Erick and Shirley were also recognized in a CTV News Edmonton story highlighting how Hispanic women and girls are connecting through STEM — a testament to how mentorship can grow into visible community impact.
These aren’t just proud moments. They’re reminders that mentorship isn’t a one-time exchange — it’s a chain reaction.
Because mentorship, at its best, is not a ladder — it’s a bridge.
You lift others as you cross, and in time, they’ll build new bridges for those who follow.
This is how sustainable leadership looks: not by holding on to knowledge, but by passing it forward.
Mentorship completes its purpose not when someone succeeds — but when they turn around and lead.
