Emigrating means making choices no one prepares you for. One of the hardest is distance — not being there for the everyday growth of the people you love.
My children grew up in Canada, surrounded by family thanks to grandmothers who stayed for months at a time. Their presence shaped my children’s childhood in ways no toy or achievement ever could.
Now, I try to do the same with my nephews in Florida. I travel often — sometimes just for a weekend — to babysit, to celebrate, to simply be there. Not because it’s convenient, but because presence leaves a deeper mark than absence ever will.
As my nephew turns another year older, I’m reminded of this: consistency is love in action.
It’s not the grand gifts or the perfect speeches that create belonging. It’s the small, repeated choice to show up, again and again. That’s what builds trust, connection, and legacy.
And that lesson doesn’t stop with family. In projects, in teams, in communities — consistency is what creates cultures that endure. Leaders aren’t defined by what they say once, but by what they practice daily.
Presence is the real work. Consistency is the real leadership. Legacy is built in the showing up.
